Herring Cove Bathhouse

Provincetown, MA

BH+A designed a new bathhouse facility at Cape Cod National Seashore. The program includes men, women and family changing rooms, lifeguard offices, garage space with boat storage and concessions. The collection of structures is connected and accessed by a series of raised boardwalks to protect and promote the local wildlife.

With an eye on sustainability, the bathhouse has been designed to withstand the effects of climate change, like rising seas and fierce winter winds, and to allow dunes to migrate naturally. The new buildings and decks have been pulled back at least 100 feet from the edge of the coast and raised about four feet. The modular design could make moving the buildings even further back a reasonable possibility in the future, if needed, and the trellis can withstand 150-mile-per-hour winds.
