Linden Chambers Redevelopment
Needham, MA
BH+A is currently working with the Needham Housing Authority and The Peabody Companies to redevelop two senior / disabled housing developments in the Town of Needham. Currently, the two state-assisted public housing properties on Linden Street and Chambers Street, consist of 152 units of elderly/disabled housing. Linden Street was built between 1959 and 1962 and consists of 18 one-story buildings making up 72 studio apartments, while Chambers Street was built in 1972 and consists of 5 two-story buildings making up 80 studio units. Both buildings, which were mostly original, showed serious aging and poor site planning, lacked MAAB compliance, had undersized units, lacked adequate parking, and had environmental concerns. BH+A studied the site to create more density, more defined and spacious outdoor community spaces, and make buildings and apartments much more functional to the needs of their current population. This redevelopment will provide the opportunity for energy efficiency and resiliency, as well as for additional affordable units. The goal of the project is to replace the existing 152 units with 220 new units, and will cost around $75M to complete.
BH+A is currently finishing bid documents for Phase I and awaiting funding to start construction.
