Attleboro Public Library

Attleboro, MA

The Attleboro Public Library includes the original 1907 Beaux-Arts front section with reading rooms and the 1992 addition, both of which suffered from moisture infiltration and obsolete mechanical systems. Our work here began with a full conditions assessment with recommendations for repairs and upgrades. Our project then proceeded into design, with full new energy-efficient HVAC and updated lighting, renovation of the elevator, and select replacement of finishes. The exterior rehabilitation included both restoration of existing original wood windows and replacement of aluminum-clad 1992 windows, new membrane and slate roofing, repairs to and cleaning of the stone.

Of particular significance was the restoration of the cast iron balconies and the copper roof cresting, both of which were restored to their original appearance. The scope of work triggered the need to do full accessibility upgrades. We worked with the City to obtain some grant funding, in addition to obtaining a Time Variance, to allow for those upgrades. The library had to remain in open through construction, so our documents incorporated a phasing plan that accommodated user needs and sequenced the mechanical work to keep it operational at all times. This project was completed in 2022.
