BH+A designed the new 50,000 sf facility with an aquatic center, gymnasium and a multitude of program spaces. The natatorium is conditioned via an air-to-air heat exchanger unit that utilizes supply and return fans, a heat pipe for energy recovery, hot water coil and dampers to modulate the outdoor, exhaust and re-circulated air. This system is tied to the pool system to reduce water heating costs. Given the non-profit client, use of “lowest operational cost systems” was crucial while providing indoor air quality of the highest level to allow for national competitions. Received 2007 Design Award from AIA of Central Massachusetts.
